ABOUT

Biography

Hélène de Saint Lager is a French sculptor and designer based in Paris, working from a home-studio-laboratory in Ivry-sur-Seine. She is known for furniture and objects cast in resin, poured aluminium and bronze.

A graduate of the École du Louvre in Art History, she trained early across a range of hands-on trades, including painting restoration, millinery, sculpture, moulding and metalwork, before developing her own studio practice.

Her furniture is built the way a painting is built: layer after layer, with pigment and found objects suspended in resin and left to settle. The same instinct for controlled accident carries into her aluminium work, where molten metal is poured into sand moulds or over steel plate and left to petrify mid-flow.

Decorator Jacques Garcia was among the first to recognise her singularity, commissioning monumental works for his projects since 2007, including resin furniture for the Schiaparelli salons on Place Vendôme and more recent projects in France. Architect Peter Marino has placed her tables in Louis Vuitton and Christian Dior boutiques worldwide, with recent commissions including projects in Milan, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, Tokyo, Beijing and Seoul.

Her work has been presented by Galerie Artcurial, Galerie du Passage and Galerie Arcturus in Paris, and by Twenty First Gallery in New York. She continues to develop new furniture, lighting and sculptural works through commissions and gallery collaborations internationally.

The Studio

Ivry-sur-Seine, just outside Paris. Resin in buckets, pigment mid-mix, aluminium cooling on the floor. The studio doubles as a laboratory, and looks like one. Nothing is staged for the photograph. This is simply where the work happens, one layer at a time.
